Walking Under Ladders

A beautiful day yesterday to walk along the shore enjoying the views and blowing away the cobwebs! I headed towards the Fig and Olive armed with my hat, gloves, scarf and book.

As I climbed the final incline with coffee almost in my grasp I encountered a ladder …. a decision needed to be made, under the ladder or round the ladder? Where did the ‘ it’s unlucky to walk under ladders’ come from? I can see the logic of avoiding a ladder when a painter looms far above with a paint pot and brush in hand, not wanting to look like a speckled punk rocker, I too may skirt around the ladder, however this is not without danger, you have to step onto the road and a boy racer could appear from nowhere, speeding down the hill and before you have time to hop back onto the pavement you could find yourself with 2 broken legs and wishing you had taken the risk of paint spilling from above!!!!!

Anyway this did get me thinking about taking risks? Are you a risk taker or is comfort what you seek? I believe that if you are truly wanting to live a life worthy of our Lord you need to be a risk taker.

If we only ever choose to attempt things where we know the outcome, have a plan laid out and feel able for the task we are never having to trust. God wants us to step out of our comfort zone, to attempt things we don’t feel qualified to do, start things we don’t know the outcome for and allow our dreams to be so big they seem impossible and scare the life out of us! This is only possible when we begin to encounter the Living God and see things from His point of view. When we realise how powerful He is and remember He is able and He is enough.

So get comfortable being uncomfortable, be obedient to His call even when you have no idea where it is going or understand why. Remember God qualifies the called, He has no need to call the qualified because His strength is made perfect in our weakness, when we are weak, He is strong.

Walk under ladders, do things even when afraid, be a risk taker for God…..He will use everything for His purpose.
